Burl Maple????.... That's where I go to first
Yep! I've checked out everything else but the burl maple always seems to speak to me the most. I think I've settled on one - I just need to clear a recent sale before I can move on anything. This one is going to be a replacement for my beloved Standard 4 that was being unfairly neglected on account of its shortcoming (having only four strings) and had to go in order to make room for a second 5.
Keep in mind that Roger's stated reason for including the graphite rods is to help reduce the likelihood of dead spots and not because the necks need added stability. I really wouldn't worry.
Does Roger even do custom Metros? I was under the impression they were 'off the rack' only.
Anyhoo, I've owned 2 Metro Will Lees (MV4 & RV4). Never had a problem with an unstable neck due to lack of a graphite bar. I have to tweak the neck no more frequently than I do my American Fender P (w/ the graphite). Roger has commented on the use of graphite, or lack thereof, on his NYC vs. Metro basses, and neck stability isn't the reason.
Spalted Maple and Buckeye Burl IMO can be either the most beautiful or ugly ,depending on the piece of wood. You have one of the most beautiful Spalted Maple basses I have ever seen!! Roger sure has great connections for tops. Congrats on your beautiful bass, and play it in good health for many years to come.
You can order from a specific subset but not really "custom" per se. Bass style (standard, UV-70, HPJ, Will Lee) and config (Maple/Ash or Rosewood/Morado/Alder) and color. The web site is pretty specific about it.
Should not be a problem. My 5/24 Metro is over 10 years old, I've had it for 4-5 of those years, and no dead spots or instability - the NYC's I've had are not noticeably better on stability, but understand the graphite and different headstock size might make a difference on deadspots, maybe more of an issue for 4-string rather than 5-string?

). Suffice to say after a session last night I am again amazed at how stupid good these basses sound in a mix. On its own sounds like a good jazz bass, in a mix FAT tone that sits just perfectly.

Did you pick that up at Club Bass?
I have an ash/amazon Standard 5 that sounds amazing - very full, rich and clear with lots of punch. Very even from string to string (the D and G are meaty, not thin). I don't know how much of the sound has to do with the wood combination and how much of it was simply luck, but the bass sounds the way I hoped it would when I ordered it. Pau Ferro, however, is not a rosewood...
