Dunlop Super Bright steels are my fav for a couple of years now. Bright, flexible, nice fundamental and they last a long time.

I just tried a set of Dunlop Super Bright Nickels and I must say they were really good and much better than I expected.

I use D'Addario Pro Steels (disclosure: I am an endorser!), but I have used these strings waaaaay before I had an endorsement deal.

I couldn't comment on tuning down as I play a 5 mostly, but I did play a 4 that I would tune all the time BEFORE I got into 5's. It sounded fine...of course it depends on your touch and gauge you choose, IMHO.

You should be fine with the 45-130 set and medium action.

as far as for Sadowsky basses, what is the thoughts on a very good steel string with some brightness and good fundamental that would be good while tuning a half step down?

The Sadowsky Black Label Stainless Steel Strings would work. More tension than Blue Labels and sound great. I have one of my Sadowskys tune down a half step and I use the Blue Label Steels. I just love these strings. They last the longest out of every string I ever used. And, have that great mid focus grind to them. Perfect!

I did some gigs w a band tuned Eb, and the Ernie Ball Cobalts worked really well tension wise for me.

Quick question on the cases. I recently got a Dingwall, and it is the only bass I have without a dedicated Hard or Soft case (my basses live in a closet in their cases and I use Mono single and double gigbags for practice and gigs). I discovered the Dingwall (no specific case is made for them) fits wonderfully in my Sadowsky soft case (the older rectangular type) when I was taking my Sadowsky to practice and tried the Dingwall in that case. I see only the Portabag is now on the Sadowsky site. Does anyone know if these are made under another brand still? Should I get a Portabag for my Sad and use this case for the Dingwall? Thx for any info and thoughts.

The case pictured is the one I ordered with my first NYC that arrived in April 2005. That Sadowsky became my favorite bass and became my #1 workhorse. 5+ years of frequent gigging (weekly, on average) plus rehearsals took its toll on the case: the corner seams frayed, the strap started to detach from the side (etc) and eventually I had to trash it. I'd still say the "soft hard case" is nice for the price given the abuse I put it through, but long story short I've been a Portabag owner for 6+ years and it's my favorite case, period. I think the Reunion Blues Continental is about equal in terms of protection and durability, but I prefer the Sadowsky teardrop shape to the RB "longneck". IMO the Portabag blows away others I've owned such as Gigblade, Mono M-80, and ProTec Contego (but the last is very reasonably priced). On top of everything else, the Portabag has handles on front, back, and side, instead of just back and side -- a small touch that I find useful. I've read some complaints that the shoulder strap system on the Portabag is awkward because both straps attach at the same point toward the top of the case, but it's not a major inconvenience for me.

I now rotate between 5 basses (including 3 Sadowskys) instead of just 2 or 3, but my two Portabags get the most frequent use and have held up beautifully.

Those are TI Flats. My favourite strings ever, so I'm biased. I'd wait for them to break in before commenting on the tone differences versus Sad flats, but the tension and general feeling is much more up my alley.

This bass almost begs to be played with a very low action and strings that enhance its "lyrical" attitude. Sometimes the right instrument/string coupling gives a result that it's more than the sum of its parts; the hardest bit is finding the right string for the right instrument, based also on personal preferences regarding tension, flexibility...

Obviously it's not wrong to have a favorite string set, in fact I envy those who do. Just sayin' that IME a string set that sounds amazing on one bass might be 'meh' on another, or vice versa.

Gotta say that TI flats pretty much became my favorite flats once I got accustomed to the low tension. But comparing flats is difficult because it often takes awhile for them to settle in. Some say it helps to rub flats with chicken grease, but I assumed that was a joke...

I pretty much use my Mono M80's for rehearsal and gigs, so the rectangular soft case goes upright in the closet with the other basses in hardshell. Does the Portabag have the "soft but structured" sides like that or is it more like say a Mono gigbag?

I was looking at the hardshell cases from Sadowsky since it just sits in my closet for storage, but that is even more than a Portabag.

The Portabag has as much protection as most hardshell cases in my opinion.
