Mods to the 5/24 can work well. I've played an older one with Nordstrand Fat Stacks, that rocked. I foolishly sold a great NYC 5/24, a long time ago, because I sought more of an old-school sound for a band that integrated a wide range of Caribbean and Mexican rock and folklorical styles. I now know that a smart pickup swap could have facilitated the best of both worlds.

I’ve been experimenting with various strings on my NYC Modern fretless, and may have found a winner, unlikely as they may seem. GHS Tapewounds…nice and thumpy, clear, defined and wonderful as far as “feel” goes. Still really like them after a couple rehearsals…but the rubber will meet the road Saturday night at our Halloween gig. They are a pleasant surprise so far. Plus…they look bitchin’ :)

This got me thinking...
I have a 5-string bass with ash body, pau ferro board, Sadowsky preamp and custom wound P2 size pickups which sound a lot like Big Splits. The tone has strong upper mids and is bright enough not to sound good with the Sadowsky pre, even with passive tone rolled back quite a bit, so I run it passive. Switching from nickel round wounds to GHS pressure wound strings helped take off some edge but it's still more than I like, so I ordered a set of Sadowsky soapbars which I know should pair well with the preamp. I don't know if this will move it too far the other direction and wonder if a series-wind Nordstrand dual coil in the bridge position would be worth trying?

Hello fellas.

I’ve ordered an RSD J 5 and trying to choose between Stacks or Splits as an upgrade to the factory Singles.
Could anyone suggest which ones to pick? What are the tonal differences between the 2 models?

i personally feel splits sound better because they're closer to a single coil sound (which is my fave) than a stack, though a stack will be better at hum cancelling simply due to the asymmetry of a 5 in a split config.

the other thing to keep in mind is a stack is likely to require routing on the body to create more space for the bottom coil, whereas a split most likely won't since they don't have one.

Stacks are fitting perfectly in RSD. No routing needed. You can also put a coil switch to use them as a single coil.

i have to speak generally, because i have the new stacks in my Japanese MetroExpress, but i don't have any Sadowsky splits in my other Sadowsky basses except for a PJ, tho i can say at least in that case, when solo'ing the J on that it's pretty representative of my other general experiences...

in my experiences, stacks don't have quite the same clarity and focus as a pure single-sensing configuration. clearly, singles are the most pure. splits are semi-pure in that at least under each string there's just the one coil around the poles, as opposed to a stack where there are two coils.

i feel like there's generally a little more meat in the low mids, and the highs are a little mellower on the stacks, vs a more transparent and focused sound from lo-hi.

so it's really just personal preference. some folks love the extra girth and smoother highs on the stacks, but i generally prefer a more blank canvas.

that said, at least in the case of Sadowsky, his stacks are the closest i've heard to the single/split sound... enough that i won't change the pickups in the JME. but i'm also not interested in replacing the singles in my two NYCs that have them. :)

True single coils are my preference. I then prefer stacks over splits. I agree with Vic that they typically are a bit more present in the low mids with a softer high end than splits. My issue with splits when compared with single coils and even the stacked is the lack of mids. True singles have more character and are fuller in the mids than splits. Splits are certainly brighter than stacks and are more similar to singles in that regard. But in every other way I find stacks to be more similar to singles.
