Are quartersawn necks now standard for the 22 and 24 fret models?

Quartersawn necks were pretty much standard on the MIJ Metros and TYOs. Very unusual to see a flatsawn neck.
I don’t believe that is correct. I’ve never seen a quartersawn neck on any MIJ metros and they’re pretty rare on NYC’s. I personally don’t like quartersawn necks. In my experience they have a different feel and response than a flatsawn.
All NYC instruments now have quartersawn necks.
Japan Metro production were all flatsawn necks.
Interested to know, what prompted the change?

I just scored a screaming deal on a 4-string, first-gen RSD Metro Express. (Details and NBD post coming later)
It has the 1st-gen SMX version of the preamp. I know that the VTC is offered as an "add-on" upgrade. Having owned several Sadowskys previously, I'm very familiar with the VTC and what it does, but here's my question:
Does the add-on deliver, or am I better off upgrading to a new 4-knob Sadowsky pre?
I've read that there were some differences with the 1st gen preamp and adding the VTC was not as straightforward as it could be. I've been doing some research and I think the difference is only around $125 (or so) between the two options. Is it a better idea to spend the few extra bucks or will the modified 1st gen pre work just fine?

Get the entire drop in preamp assembly.
I've looked at doing the VTC upgrade on my RSD ME, and I'll be going with the complete 4-knob pre-amp version when I do decide to do it. The simplicity of connecting the pickups and output jack vrs the complexity of all of the work/wiring you have to do to swap in the VTC retrofit it's a no-brainer to me.
Or just do what Roger says.
