Well here is mine. I got it a few months back actually. Does midi and all that. Tuned E-C, 34" scale. I asked him to just modify the lower horn of one of his other designs...I dunno, do you guys think it's too Fodera-ish? I like it a lot personally, but I worry about it being "perceived" a certain way as I play it out more.

I will say that construction and playability wise it is as good as anything I have ever played. So...quite a deal overall. it looks darker in person, these shots are a little overexposed. Well let me know what you guys think.

Holy crap that's a nice bass...

How much you want for it? :)

It does look pretty Fodera-ish, but there aint nothing wrong with that!

Well I'm not a big fan of people being too heavily influenced by someone else's original designs, but it was my shape idea. But it turned out a liiittle more close than I thought. Just wasn't sure about it...but it is quite nice overall. Just not sure I will get another with this design.

I'm sorry it took me so long to see this.
Let me see if I can help you out.

The only tool you need is a fine (not coarse) flat file.

The important thig to remember with a file is that you "push it".
files work in one direction only. Files aren't like sand paper where you move them back and forth.
(sorry if that's obvious but some people don't know that.)

hold the file parallel with the neck.
keep the surface of the file perpendicular to the fretboard.

IMG_1559.jpg

resting the file on the extended fret ends will separate the file from the wood that you don't want to file.
you will also see the gap between the file and the side of your fingerboard.
with a light touch, push the file along the neck over those extended fret ends.
try to feel how the file grinds against the fret wire. only remove a little at a time.

I've tried to add a video clip but not sure if I did it right...
I'll try to link it a different way if this doesn't work.

<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="Invalid Link Removed">

the frets will actually feel kind of soft.
use many, many light, long passes and you will begin to notice that the file is no longer grabbing into the fret wire.
if you want to take this process any further, get some super fine sand paper to really smooth the fret ends.
otherwise, that's it.

there's nothing special to doing this. Just take your time and you won't bump the fingerboard wood.
Again, I'm really sorry it took me so long to get this to you.
if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask and you're welcome to PM me as well.
I really hope this helps.
Chad

WOW... That's more than I need, thanks a lot!!!

Anyways, I'm thinking about doing some modifications on my bass, already called Chris, and If I eventually send my bass back to him, I guess he can help me sand down the frets, but if not, I guess doing this myself is not difficult.

Again, Thanks a lot Chad...

Remember your camera! There...there's your reminder. :)

Can't wait to see some pics and review of your new Stammie.

So to my credit, I remembered the camera. Unfortunately, I forgot to check the batteries, so naturally they were depleted.

I did see your bass, however, and it looks AWESOME! Chris said it would be going to the finisher's soon- Monday, I think, so you're on the home stretch! Very cool bass, and apparently the purpleheart was a pain, so there's an extra bonus!

Sure, it's kind of Fodera-ish, but most people might say that about most singlecut style basses with a gallery grade top and all sorts of bells and whistles. FWIW, I don't think too many people have topped PJ pickups, so it's not what I'd call an immitation. Tribute? Sure. Then again, I was almost deliberate with being a bit of a Fodera clone on mine.

Oh yeah... my bass.

Here are the specs:
33" 6-String Single-Cut Neck-Through
Holly Top
Mahogany Body
Maple Neck w/ Gabon Ebony Fingerboard
Holly Ramp
Aero Pickups with (you guessed it) Holly covers
Mike Pope preamp
Gold Hardware
Mandolin Frets
Bass Clef Snail inlay

WOW... That Bass is awesome... Very-very-very nice...

How does the Aero match with the Pope Pre?

I read some questions about what's the best preamp to match the Aero PUs, and I never tried any other Stambaughs, mine is passive Dual coil Aero, sometimes I run it through my Tone Hammer, and it sounds great, 'hi-fi' if you want to say it. 5Stringgecko said his Aero with the Bart Preamp sounds like an MTD.

So I am a bit curious about what other Aero-Preamp combos could result...

Holy crap....that thing is intense in a very subdued way.......if that makes any sense. I think it's badass, I hope mine turns out half as cool as this one. How about a review?

When it really comes down to it who gives a rat's ass what other people think. I think it's a killer bass and if you can get Fodera quality and sound/beauty out of a fully custom bass for a third of the price of the real deal, that's a win in my book.

I'm sure there's alot of people that will hate my new build but it's exactly, if not more than, I wanted. If you love the way it came out then that's all that matters. IMHO of course.
