The upper level of bass playing is rising sharply in recent years - the same repertoire still exists for the instrument, but these days those cream-of-the-crop students going for conservatory auditions and the players going for orchestral jobs are working on more advanced repertoire at young ages than was the case in the days of yore.
What I mean is that these days colleges are able to ask and generally receive performances of pieces that would be too technically demanding for the students of yesteryear.
The Capuzzi can be a wonderful little piece when performed by a capable bass player, but don't expect it to show up on many college audition lists because some kids can play harder music and it creates a new standard for people taking on careers of playing the bass.
