Just a question of particulars... Did you guys do your submission to the UMS through the pay to be considered link on the UMS site or were you asked to play another way?

It would have been fun to play this weekend but I'm so vehmently against the pay to play thing (or in this case the pay to be considered thing)... Even if it's only $10 or $15. As it turns out I'm getting knee surgery tomorrow and won't be coming. Sorry, man. I've been the last 3 or 4 years and it's a good time for sure.

I write a blog on sales and career strategy for the consulting profession, and a while I ago I posted Link Removed. I intended it as an expose of a predatory line of business. You might be interested.

Hey, is anyone playing the Denver post UMS this year? If you are, come check out my band. We are playing Saturday @ 515 on the groove stage.

Indeed, both of my bands are this year. Ross Etherton & the Chariots of Judah plays Saturday at 8 pm at the Irish Rover, and Bad Luck City plays Sunday at 11 pm at Hi-Dive.

I like the UMS, but it's lost some of its charm to me in the last couple of years. It used to be a fun way to see bands that you're usually playing competing shows with the rest of the year, spread over two days. 4 days and a bunch of national acts is a bit much. I liked it a lot better before it started spreading so far north. I learned last year that it's a long walk to/from 404 to the rest of the venues. This year, I have a badly broken foot, so I'm playing my sets and going home to convalesce.

Neither of my bands paid to play (and wouldn't). I think that we just asked the folks who were booking the event if we could play. It was that easy.

Best of luck with the knee surgery--I'm having a bad time with recovery from foot surgery last month.

We were asked to play. No submission necessary! We have been in the indie rock scene for almost 4 years now, so if its in Denver, we usually don't have to submit anything.

If anyone wants to come to the marquis theater on Friday the 29 of July, my band is competing to play warped tour. Just a little plug! Plus, its a 7 band bill for only 5 bucks. Party!

^^^^ speedy recovery!!! best wishes!!!

My band is about to play all the open mike/jams in the city and was wondering how many people do the same or have in the past? And have any advice?

Thanks TB

It really depends on your style. Soda jerk was doing open Mic for a while at summit music hall on Wednesdays I believe. They are a good company to get in with just because they run a big part of the Denver scene (especially if you play any kind of rock). That would be a good first step. Then you need to start networking with other Denver bands that have a similar sound but have a bigger draw than you. That's a good way to make new fans. Then start sucking up to westword, Colorado music buzz, and 93.3. If they hate you, they can make it very hard to play shows in Denver. Hope that helps! You can message me if you want any more help with anything. I have plenty of contact info for various venues around town.

Thanks for the advice!!
I totally forgot about the Soda Jerk guys. I see their name fairly often. There seems like there is a lot of places to play. We hope to hit as many as possible and try to get a paying gig by this fall. We played the blues jam at Bushwackers a week or 2 ago a got our first stage legs! My fret board look completely different under stage lights!!!:bassist:
We are at the Toad Tavern this Tuesday for their open jam.

I'm from Alaska, so I'm both perpetually annoyed at "outsiders" and exceptional at both summer and winter driving.

I spent a couple of years up in Anchorage. Drove back to Haines and took the ferry down to Washington but did that with a complete set of studded tires. Still ended up driving my MR-2 off the road and down a ravine.

Welcome to Colorado, even if it's only temporary!
