Coloring Plastic

Hi, wanted to change the color of some pickups with plastic covers and wondered if anyone had some advice. Krylon makes a spray paint for plastic and thought that might be the way to go.

Valspar's paint is really nice on plastic, even though it doesn't say so... Almost any interior enamel spray paint will be fine on Plastic, just be sure to use some kind of clear coat. Krylon is iffy, I've had some Krylon dry poorly on stompboxes. Rustoleum is usually good paint too, but their rattle can tips are bad about clogging, especially those ones with the fancy grip. If you can't get Valspar, Duplicolor makes a spray paint can you can get at the auto stores, it's good stuff too! Probably a good idea to go over the pickup cover with 600 grit sandpaper as well, especially if you use Duplicolor.

I've had excellent results with the Krylon for plastic. I actually used it on a plastic r/c car body and it worked as advertised.

Another alternative is if you can get some white plastic covers you can dye them most any color you want with RIT fabric dyes.

Was looking at Ace in paint. If I use a clear coat do you use flat or gloss for the color?

From what i remember about painting plastics is the prepping part is just as important as the painting one (actually this holds true for anything to be painted). The plastic piece has to be clear of oil and I've noticed that if the surface is sanded a bit the paint sticks better.
