As a long time user of the brand, I'll throw my standard Ampeg sales pitch out here, new or used. At least check them out even if you end up with something else. Lot's of great deals out there nowadays on just about all the brands.
Forgot to mention that we have the "Combo Club" thread here at TB. Those folks can also help point you in the right direction. You should have a fair number of shops in your are where you can go look and try something, before you have to spend any money.
I had an Ampeg BA-115HPT for a few years, until it was stolen. I liked it. It had some useful features (tuner, headphone jack, etc.). It was loud enough to gig, but only in bands that don't play very loud.
On Saturday I picked up a used Mesa Walkabout/Scout 15 for only $600. O. M. G. It appears there are about ten thousand posts here on TB praising this amp, and for good reason.
