combo w/ external head?

If you could plug the output of your external amp directly into your combo's loudspeaker, there shouldn't be a problem as long as there isn't an impedance mismatch, and you don't overdirive the speaker.

However, if you're thinking about taking the loudspeaker output of your external amp and plugging it into the instrument input jack of your combo, that won't work because your combo's input jack is designed to accept an instrument-level signal, which is much lower (by several orders of magnitude) than a line-level or power amp output; a line-level or power amp output will overdrive the front end of your combo causing a LOT of distortion.
