you can get jack to USB audio convertors. they arent expensive but it complicates things a bit more.

all you would need then is some sort of amp sim on your e-book and away you go. no need for an amp plus you would have all your MP3's or whatever on tap

Yeah, i was surprised at the price as well.
I have a BassV-amp that i got to practice with at home. i had a BassPODXT but got rid of it and got the BassV-amp because that has a stereo line in with level control. it works great with my MD or Cd player. the sounds are good and it even comes in a carry case that i can fit my MD player in. its cheap as well but i found after a while that it was more hassle to keep burning discs to take it to the other room so i now just plug straight in to the PC.

I have an Eden Nemesis amp. I have the 80 watt with single 10" and it's got all the stuff you need. It has 2 channels, CD/iPod input, headphone out, balanced line out, ext speaker out, etc. It's pretty light and portable and has a great sound. I use it for practice at home, and if I needed it for a gig, I could use an external speaker (bringing it to 100 watts) or run a line out to the PA. The Nemesis line comes in bigger amps too, but I'm not sure if they all have the line in & headphone out options.

It's perfect for me and small/light enough that I can use it anywhere in the house. But not as tiny as like a Peavey Minx or something that is purely a practice amp.
