combo????

i have a Ibby swx 100 watt combo, it has a 1x15 .on the back the only reference to ohms is 4 ohms min. my question is can i put a spliter where it plugs in and and hook up a 2x10 cab untill i can afford to get a new head the 2x10 is 8 ohms

So your combo has just 1 speaker plug, that it's internal 15" speaker is normally connected to right?

If so, you'd have to confirm what ohm speaker is in the combo now. If its a 8 ohm speaker, then you could safely connect it together in parallel with your other 8 ohm cab for a combined ohm load of 4 ohms.

If your combo's internal speaker is currently a 4 ohm model, adding any other speakers (connected in parallel) would end up being lower than your amp sections '4 ohm minimum" and most likely damage its poweramp.

well i only have one speaker plug, the combo has a plug for the speaker. so if i unplug the 15. because i believe it is a 4 ohm. (i am not sure, and i cant find any information on the speaker.) then run the 8 ohm 2-10 cab threw that. only. no combo speaker. would that be ok? the only thing it says on the plug the speaker goes into- is 4 ohm minimum.

I cant seem to find any info about your Ibby swx 100 watt combo but I'm assuming it has a solid state powered amp section.

Usually Solid state bass combos that dont have an extra extension speaker jack are equipped with an internal speaker thats rated to get the most power out of its power amp section. In your case that would probably be a 4 ohm speaker and an amp rated for 4 ohm minimum use.

If you can get a hold of a electrical tester that measures ohms, (a multi-meter) you could test your speaker to learn if its a 4 or 8 ohm model. If you get a measurement on yours, post your results and we'll help you figure out what it is.
Here's some threads with more info on testing your combo's speaker:

The good news is its perfectly safe to run a 8 ohm cab off a solid state poweramp rated at a 4 ohm minimum. (you can go higher, just not lower)

The bad news is that 8 ohm speaker load will result in your solid state poweramp to have much less power than it would powering a 4 ohm cab load. (like maybe only 50 watts...)

So... even though your 2x10 cab may possibly be better quality than your combos internal speaker, it may not be any louder because of the 1/2 power at 8 ohm thing.

Tube powered amps have whole different set of ohm rules. Here's a really good sticky thread explaining the whole "ohm thing". It explains all this much better than me and you should check it out some time:
