Comparing Ampeg Combos?

Hi Folks,
We already have an earlier BA115, tilt back, top knob combo. It's funny that some places list it as 100 watts while others say 150! :confused: Either way, the tweeter is shot and we replaced the "farty" sounding 4Ω, OEM speaker with a very healthy 8Ω, RCF/EAW driver and though it "officially" drops the wattage, it's much more clear and robust sounding now.

I now have the opportunity to grab a B-100R, from a pawn shop for $100, out the door! While the reviews around here on this amp seem quite positive, I'm curious as to whether this B-100R would be an actual "upgrade" or simply a lateral move to something dramatically similar to what we already have. I'm intrigued about comments that the B-100R sounds/responds surprisingly like a tube amp, similar to a B-15.

Though we have bigger bass gear on hand, as a burgeoning, occasional, part time bassist, I'm quite fond of Ampegs general take on how tone controls on a bass amp should react and sound! :cool: I'm pretty sure I'd be in heaven with an SVT on top of an 8x10 and two 15" thiel boxes! drool Not really into the concept of the size, weight and maintenance though! :rollno:

C'mon, please folks. I'm bumping this to keep it on the first page, but I've seen so many reviews of the B-100R, by well heeled folks here that I'm simply looking for a comparison, as I can't really do one in a pawn shop!

Alright, I feel your pain, so I'll give you another free bump. I can't add much because I've not personally tested a B-100R, nor have I tested your modded BA115. I do have experience with the stock, earlier kickback B115. I can see why you might have wished to mod it - I'll leave it at that.

What kind of "bigger bass gear" do you have on hand? Just trying to figure out where that B-100R might fit into what else you have going on. Price seems alright, just a matter of if it will actually be worth it for you in the grand scheme of things. How do you plan on using it?

I only played on a friend's BA115 a couple of times. It was the the original version where the controls were on the top at the back. It seemed like a nice rig to me, but I've only owned a few pieces of Ampeg gear and couldn't give a fair comparison even with the updated model.

TB member JimmyM is the Ampeg expert and would be the guy whose opinion I would take to the bank on something like this.
