Composer's Tools

Ironically, I do computer stuff for a living, but I am decidely low tech when it comes to music(beyond importing multi track stuff into the puter to mix and process).

What would you get if you wanted a polyphonic keyboard that you could use to control samples on your puter? Like a USB/midi dealie? What app could feed it directly to music notation?

I am hoping to sample my DB and some acceptable horn/piano/guitar/drum sounds for composing use only. In other words, this stuff will not make it to the public ;-) I'd like to be able to chart stuff out this way to give it to my band. I have a PC with Acid 2.0, Rewire, Cool Edit Pro on it. I have Firewire/USB/Midi inputs. Cheap is good, and I don't particular care about a touch sensitive keyboard if it's gonna jack the price up very much...

Thanks!
