I’ve used compression in my Helix a lot. In fact, I run compression at the start and end of my signal path. But I never loved it. It felt like a clunky effect that was an improvement in the same way a sledgehammer is an improvement over a stick, but you just need a hammer. That all ended today.

Turning The Custard Factory on my tone was just better. Maybe it’s the circuit, maybe it’s the presence knob, or maybe the Helix compressors just suck. I don’t know.

Maybe more expensive compressors like the Cali76 are better, but I haven’t A/B’d them. Maybe I will love that better? But I do know I am in love with this pedal and won’t be parted from it for a long time!

I now know why bassists love compression so much!

Do you still have it?
Do you still use it?
If so, what are your thoughts about it now?
If not, why did you end up getting rid of it?

I just bought one from Musician's Friend, it will be here later in the week.

Cali76 CB for me. Had a Keeley Bassist for a while but the Cali76 CB is so much better. Had the Cali76 v2 for a few days and it was technically better but I ended up returning it as I enjoy the baked in sound of the CB better and sound is king for me.

Hi

yes, I still use it as my always on pedal and still love it! Maybe there are better compressors out there, I don’t know. I just know I love what this pedal does more than any other compressor I’ve tried.

earlier I had it turned off by mistake and I couldn’t work out why my tone sucked so much. Then I turned it on and the world was right again. It just works!

No worries. YMMV, but my settings are around:
  • Compression: 7
  • Attack: slow
  • Presence: 2
  • Mix: 8
  • Volume: matching dry signal
Sometimes I’ve gone for compression 4 and a fast attack, etc. I don’t claim to be a pro at compression but a long stretch, but try those songs first and then ignore me and find your own settings.

something I like about the custard factory is I can get a good compression enhancement with minimal effort.

After recently discovering the Laney Digbeth Pre pedal and how amazing it is, especially for the price, i am really intrigued by the Custard Factory. If it is similar in quality i bet it kicks ass! I used to have a Cali CB but didn't like the baked in tone so sold it. Been playing without compression recently and liking it but i do sometimes miss having it.
