Compression

Behringer Composer Pro rack unit in my preamp's effects loop.

Compressing post-EQ helps me get the sound I'm after, but pre-EQ is a valid approach, too.
This is a common topic of discussion among us sound engineers, with no clear winning side due to all the variables.

There's a lot to be said for taming your dynamic range a bit before the signal hits other effects pedals, so first in line makes sense.
Used later in the signal chain a comp can effectively boost the noise of previous pedals, especially distortion, so that's something to consider.
