Compressor newb question

Hi everyone - I'm thinking of trying a compressor to try and achieve what I would call more "punch" or maybe "percussion" to the attack of my notes. I know tone and describing such things are all subjective, but the sound I'm after is close to Bill Gould from Faith No More, especially the album The Real Thing. A good example is the song The Morning After.

Now I know part of the equation is EQ and a bit of overdrive, and I play primarily with a pick, depending on the tone required. But I'm sure some compression would get me the rest of the way.

I've read through Bongomania's excellent compression tutorial. I'm thinking of picking up either an Aguilar TLC or an MXR M87, I guess could anyone on the board here just confirm that what I want to achieve is possible? The idea I have in my head is to set a slowish attack time, fairly high threshold and fairly low ratio. Release, no idea on this one.

My aim would be to slightly enhance the attack of the note to be punchier and a little more percussive, but to not really affect the overall volume and decay of the notes.

What say ye compression experts? Possible?

Thanks guys...valuable information. I'm keen to make the journey on my own, just need a gentle nudge in the right direction!
Boomertech would my suggested settings seem to be in the ball park for what I'm after? Essentially slightly enhancing the attack of the notes?

If you use a slowish attack with a quick release, then you will get the punch you are looking for. But if you are also using an OD then you may not even need a compressor, because OD's, distortions and fuzzes naturally limit your signal amplitude.
