compressor recommendation for tomorrow!

hey guys, i think i need a compressor. got a gig where they want me to play my baby bass and the thing is pretty anemic sounding. no punch through the mix, and a dead spot on the g string. im using preamps, eq, overdrive etc, but cant seem to get the punch that i need. im thinking compressor, and im limited to ones that i can get with overnight shipping. so, my possible list so far is: joyo, wampler, mxr m87, aguilar, xotic sp, carl martin vintage. any advice on which of these would be best for me? responses by noon eastern would be appreciated!

Where are you located? I'm somewhat disturbed by the fact that you're making a "rushed" purchase (overnight shipping) on something with which you have seemingly little experience. Any way you can borrow a comp...any comp...locally as a band-aid?

good point about borrowing, although i dont think i have access to any. ill check out the local guitar shops to see if i can try, but the selection here is usually very limited. and to the poster who linked bongo's site, thanks. i read it and all the ones i listed seemed to get pretty good reviews although didnt answer my question specifically that i could tell.

Sorry if I'm too late, I just got back home. I'd narrow it to the Wampler or the M87. Between those two, I like the blend control of the Wampler and the LED metering of the MXR, so you could pick which of those features suits you better.

I'm not guaranteeing any of them will make an "anemic"-sounding bass suddenly sound awesome, though. But they could help.

thanks, im thinking they may help. i was able to borrow the fishman pedal with the compressor on it, and with the thing maxxed out it did seem to help. id love to tame the lower strings a bit more (they're so much louder than the upper) so im hoping a better pedal will make me happier, although i could gig with this thing if needed

just wanted to keep you guys updated since you were so nice to help me. i was able to borrow a t rex comp nova. i kind of like it. i read bongo's review and he said he didnt love it because it doesnt do peak limiting (which i dont need), and because the attack time always seems to be slow, which may be one of the reasons i like it. i definitely want to retain the punch at the beginning of my note. it sounds good here at home, but i know i wont know for sure until the gig. does it sound like this would be a good unit for me just based on this? also, now that i have more time, im thinking of getting the markbass for my long term needs. what do you think?

It really is best to work with one for a while, to find out what you do and don't like about it. That way (a) you have a better idea what to ask for with the next one, and (b) you give the first one a chance to surprise you as you get familiar with it.

There have been comps that I disliked, or that didn't impress me, until I had spent significant time with them.
