Actually that's a misleading statement. Drive failures have more to do with the drive manufacturer than the computer manufacturer. Sure, you get the occasional hard drive controller failure, but most of the time it's just the drive dying. The only moving parts in PCs (and Macs) are the drives and the fans, and they WILL fail eventually -- you can count on it. It's only a matter of when. So, be diligent and back your stuff up regularly.
But... but... but the computer manufacturer choses the drives to put into the computers!
EXACTLY! They go with the 'lowest bidder', not the best quality. Granted, they all have had their runs with putting out bad drives, but last I checked, HP used Hitachi drives, which are consistently worse than any of the other manufacturers.
I know this is just an opinion, but in my experience, Seagate seems to be top dog as far as drive longevity goes.
