Computer mic in problem

I have this weird problem with audacity and my laptops mic in socket... I can hear the bass from the speakers just fine, and can record it from the mixed output, but when trying directly from the mic in, i get almost no signal at all. Plus the mixed output is leaking in to the audio recorded only from the mic in. And since i'm recording bass, there should be no possibility for the leaking...

The microphone is selected from windows sound panel as the recording source, the levels are fine through the speakers, the mic is the source in audacity and everything should be just right but it's still not working.... Any ideas...? Oh yeah, i don't have a line in socket..

Most laptops have a built in microphone. Do you accidentally have that one selected as the active recording input? You'd still be able to hear everything else and the ambient mic would record everything coming from the speakers. Check in the recording section of the mixer properties and see if there's another microphone input that's not checked as visible.

Mic boost is on, I have tried without it but it just gets quieter (dah... ) without it. That's also strange, IMO line signals shouldn't need any boosting.. Usually i've had problems getting them quiet enough..

And it has no built in microphone.
