So historically I have always gravitated toward ye olde somewhat-scooped amp tone, subconsciously I suppose. I like an MXR M80 with the Color switch on, for instance, but also I usually put back in some mids at a different freq so it's not too hollow.
So I am incredibly surprised to find that my 360+ preamp, whose sound I love, apparently does the scoop too and I didn't know it, even when the Variamp is set on 5 with Effect at about 3:00. I *thought* that the variamp was a mid-freq selector and that the Effect knob was boost or cut of that frequency. BUT, in a case of "maybe I should simplify" I tried taking the 360 pre out of the chain and seeing if I could get that tone out of my ELF head. Well, in order to do so, I have to basically crank the Bass to 10 and cut the Mids to 0! That's really surprising - and even then, the lows aren't quite as heavy as coming out of the 360!
Anybody out there who knows these things in detail able to educate me a little? I know the ELF's knobs are at 80, 400 and 4.2K, and I thought that the 360's Variamp was 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 from 1 to 5, but that would have to mean the Effect knob doesn't work the way I expected.
