confused. help me figure out WHAT this bass is?

traded an old bass i don't use to a guy in a band at our show on monday. he had a big crush on the bass and i don't care much for it so it worked out well for me. at first glances it looks like a fender deluxe p bass, the p/j pickups and active electronics.

i'm confused however, because i want to find a b/w/b pickguard to put on it, and the ones for the deluxe pbasses are cut for 4 knobs, while this bass only has three. in fact, upon closer examination, the holes for the pull bar and bridge cover look like the pickguard for the fender 50s precision bass (Invalid Link Removed)

except those only have 2 knobs. so again, confusion. whatever it is, it's a 60th anniversary edition of it, unless the neck and the body are from 2 different basses. i'm confused but i at least want to find out what kind of pickguards i can purchase for this bass. help if you can! thanks.

A California Precision Special, or the MIM Precision Special before they went with active for it. Or, a generic P bass body with a '57 Vintage Series anodized guard on it. Check the hole for the output jack on the side. Does it look factory or aftermarket?

I'm leaning towards either the California or the MIM P Special though, based on the bridge and general appearance.

the output jack looks pretty much straight from the factory to me.

there is a hole for the battery for active electronics, but there doesn't seem to be anywhere to actually plug it in. either that or the wires have fallen down inside the bass somewhere.

It's not a Fender. Wrong knobs. Wrong style bridge for the Precision Bass Special. The Precision Bass Special did not have a thumb rest or pickup cover as this pickguard has hold for. Also the finish on the Fender is flat black

it has the exact same bridge as my reggie hamilton sig, and it could just have a different gold pickguard on it than came with it. same with the knobs. i'll post a picture of the neck/headstock when i get home, that part at least seems to be legitimate.

just realized that it's a 10 hole pickguard, which definitely narrows down the number of basses it could be, or the body at least. and it DEFINITELY narrows down the number of replacement pickguards that are going to fit it. maybe the gold will grow on me.
