Cons of a thin Bass?

You could use the Vishay panel mount pots.

Those are nice, but at $10-15 each, a little much IMO. The Alpha 9mm pots are tiny:

You could easily fit any active setup you want in a 1" thick bass. Pedal builders often do much more complex circuits in boxes that are 1.06" deep.
 
Standard push pull pots and battery boxes limit thin bodies so I have been going no thinner than 1.5" I can't picture playing sitting down with a bass resting on your leg that is much thinner in that area anyway. But that is just me.....t

Im still thinking about Active electronics. Wouldnt a wider cavity make more space? I would have to put the 9V flat on its side though.

Not sure about other makes, but EMG's BTS and BTC stuff has the boards mounted on the pot, so it needs a minimum amount of room to fit. Somewhere between 7/8" and 1".

One drawback is that you have to whatch your pickup screws very carefully when you adjust them, it's really easy to drive them through a thin body. (And subsequently feel like a FOOL!!!:mad:)

Yeah, that too. Measure how deep they're going to go before you drill. Mark the drill bit with a stop or piece of tape...don't eyeball the pilot holes. I cut down the pickup screws to keep this from happening, or get shorter ones.

SOme of the circuitry is directly attached to the back of a very tall pot. I have one of these preamps in a 1.75" thick bass-- it barely fits. Now that bass does have a wood cavity cover that is about 3/16" of an inch thick- so a plastic or metal cover mounted over the hole would make more space. Nevertheless, some of these preamps take about an inch for cavity depth.

Now if there is an "easy" way to disassesmble these pot mounted circuits and move them off to the side it may work-- but since most of use do not build our own onbaord active EQ/preamps, I wouldn't consider it easy. But hey I could be wrong.

Thats actually the look im going for with the body. Ill probably end up making it a neck through And paining it white with a large cavity for the pots. That input jack is in the coolest place too! The EMG's in my Shecter arent mounted on put instead are to the side. I could always go passive EMG's too If I feel theres no space :hmm:

You're right, but I'm also right. If only it could always be so on the internet! :)

What I said was true: any active preamp circuit (here I'm talking about a circuit, not necessarily a specific PCB and pot combination) can be made in a 1" deep cavity. However, using the off-the-shelf parts in a premade, prewired onboard preamp may preclude you from doing this. You could either get a custom-built preamp (don't know why more people don't do this; it can be done for the same price as most common preamps), or just use a different pot. There are smaller dual and switched pots available for sure.

But I know that many people don't like to mess with electronics or procure special parts, or deal with getting something custom made.

We are BOTH right. I took your claim to be that of the shelf stuff oculd fit easily, I guess thats not what you meant.
I didn't realize a custom preamp could be had for about the same cost as an off the shelf one, thanks for the info.
I might look into that one day.

As I've made some of my own pickups- I may also look into making some preamps as well.
