cons of P/J ?

Hah! I had that EXACT set up in a Jazz Bass Special (think "Duff" bass), oh, about 20 years ago. I LOVED that combo! I no longer have the bass, but I have the record I played it on!
I have/had one. I have and older P/J Squier special. Its beat up and i rescued her and brought her home for a good cleanup for $60.. at GC 
It has the jazz neck and plays real sweet...but.
There is no way to solo the P pup from the J they are on a mixed pot and i liked that sound for rock but not for blues and more old school. I need to get it wired with another pot to control the J pup and mix and blend it with the P pups when and if i want to . I cut the leads for now so its my back up P to my MIM P for now but it cool.

I put two concentrics and a three way on mine. The body is a jazz, and there is a fellow on ebay selling wired control panels for 99 bucks or so. I asked if he could do one with a three way and he charged an extra 15 bucks. It may not work for you if you slap as the three way is kinda close to the pup, but I don't so..... It gives me total control over both pups. I still need a pickguard to finish the jpb, but I have it strung up now, and it KICKS! I also must add that a "real" P/J would have the P pup a tad closer to the neck. I routed out the neck jazz slot for the P.

Yeah I normally do about 70% P and 30% J This gives me full Deep chocolaty P slap thump with a slight J mid crunch. It is delicious for my ears.
FWIW, I have a Reggie Hamilton Signature that I absolutely adore, and it's getting more use than my '75 RI b/c of how versatile it is. Mine's the "standard" model which is MIM, but it's standard with a US P pickup and a Noiseless J, along with the typical MIM deluxe preamp (which will soon be replaced by an Audere). I don't see any drawbacks to the PJ setup AT ALL, in fact, I just swapped my Highway 1 for a Precision Special Deluxe (also MIM) just to have another PJ in my arsenal.

BTW, any idea where you're planning to get your pickguard? I ask b/c I've been jones'in for a tort guard for the RH Sig and don't feel like shelling out an arm and a leg
I have found tort pickguards anywhere from 35 bucks to 90 bucks, for pre-cut and blanks. Since mine is odd, A friend convinced me to put a black guard on for now, and if it fits well, trace that for the tort guard. I just googled tort pickguards and found a bunch of companies.

I have always been a fan of P/J setups. My most recent venture into this area came through my Gas for a NYC Sadowsky PJ/JJ I didn't want to bit the bullet on a new one and a use one was almost impossible to find. So I had a conversation with Carey Nordstrand about him build me a PJ/JJ Nordy vJ5 at a slight upcharge that was more affordable than the NYC Sad. Sold my Sadowsky MV5 to help finance it and have no regrets at all. The PJ setup is awesome thick fat fantastic articulation, and slap tone off the chain. Plus I have the ability to drop in another J pickup at the neck sweet.......

My Sadowsky NYC PJ VJ4 (official model name) is also routed for a jazz pickup on the neck position, but I think that the P is not moving out of there anytime soon.

That looks exactly like mine, well the grain on mine isn't as pretty!

As a few others have mentioned, as long as you like a P tone more than a J tone, and don't mind split coil pickups, the P/J is pretty cool.
I view it more as a P+ than having much to do with a J bass. The disconnect to these basses has always been the required split coil in the bridge pickup, which moves the bass into a little more of a 'modern' type tone area to my ear. Most P guys that I know are entrenched in 'vintage tone land', and the additional of a hum cancelling J pickup in the bridge position seems a little bit of a disconnect.
However, the Sadowsky type models that are quite modern to begin with make more sense to me. I greatly prefer the tone of the Sadowsky JJ model, but I like Jazz Basses.

I wasn't really asking where to buy pickguards specifically, I was asking if you had a place that you were going to get YOURS. My Reggie Sig is a standard production instrument, and I can't find a standard replacement guard for it. Fender produces them in black (for the black body) and tort (for the red body). I wasn't sure if you knew where you were getting yours, if you'd like a tracing of my guard, I'd be happy to get it for you, altho from the looks, your pickup is about 1/2" closer to the bridge than mine is. I'd be happy to trace mine tho.

I haven't decided yet where to get the tort, sorry. I like the look of the black one so that will go on first. OUr screw holes seem to be at the same place. If you look at the screw for the P pup, it is just slightly rearward of the point of the control panel. I have mine next to me, and it looks identically placed to yours.
I can do it but I doubt that it will work for you. NYC pickguards are cut individually for each bass.
Use a hum canceling J pup. Duncan make several models as do other makers. Personally I use the "Classic Stack" STK-J1b bridge (and a SPB-1 P-bass). The STK-J1b sounds like my standard Jazz bridge pup without the annoying buzz. Solo the P and it sounds just like a 57 Precision.
