Considering a Fender Stu Hamm Urge 1 MIM

Anyone here have experience with the Fender Stu Hamm Urge 1 MIM, the one with two J pickups and no P?

Can the sizzle be tamed by rolling off treble or is this the kind of bass where the hi-fi vibe is always present?

Was the G string on yours very close to the edge of the board? Did you find a fix for it?

If I got this, I'd install a push/pull w a 250k pot for passive mode. Not sure how the stock ceramic pickups would sound in passive mode. Passive pickups w high output might be in order like SD Quarter Pounders.

One of the few Fenders I'd like to try, if I could only bring myself to ever think about buying a Fender product.
I'm guessing you've already considered going with something like GHS black tapewounds to tame the tone...worked wonders with my G&L L2000.
Other than that, have you considered Bacchus or Lakland or G&L instead?

I passed on one of these a couple years ago at a great price & regret it. I agree with the GHS tapes - great choice string for these basses.

I passed on it. In the end I realized it's not quite what I'm after. That said, tapes are good advice in general. I still haven't tried them. Just a few types of flats and a variety of rounds.

I had one of these for years, customized all to heck and loved it. Aped Nick Campbell, and swapped in a guyatone gold foil in the front position, and a bass jazzmaster at the bridge. Ran it dead passive with rounds. These things as SO playable it's insane. 33" scale, 24 frets? Magic. Got mine for like $550. Just rarely played it.

I had one years ago. Very light, didn't feel particularly well made and sounded dreadful. It's a huge step down from the proper Urge I. I bought it sight unseen but luckily I managed to sell it on again quickly and never looked back.
