Considering a Godin A4...

Maybe I'm crazy (probably), but I think I just fell in love with a Godin A4 :eek:

I walked into a local Mills Music today and they had one there. It's been there for years (they don't seem to get much business), and I remember not really liking it when I played it before. But today I picked it up again, since I'm much more into hollowbody basses now, and it was downright awesome. It played well, sounded really thick and well defined (fretless, with flatwounds), and had a really sweet tone. The acoustic tone and volume really surprised me too. I didn't even plug it in.

It was $750, but they've got a rent to own program where you pay $49 a month. It's really tempting me...:help:

What do you think?

I think they are Amazing basses.
I played one A4 Fretless and two A5 FL , and they where all great.
Great neck , amazing sound , very nice growl. A tad heavy but nothing extreme.
if you have the cash , then buy it. Its one amazing instrument.

I don't really see them for sale locally, so I don't know. Looking at new prices online and ebay prices, seems good to me. I didn't notice if it was new or used - it looked brand new. But I would be doing the rent-to-own program anyways. I think the way it works is that you pay for the first 3 months up front (so, $150), and then you can return it or keep making $50 minimum monthly payments until it's paid off.

$150 seems pretty good, to be able to try it out on gigs / at home for 3 months to see how it really feels and sounds after a while. And I start working full time in about a month, so I could pay it off before all the interest starts bringing the final price up.

the small store in town has a twin set of a4 fretless and fretted. I love going in there and playing them. One day i played the a4 fretted against a breedlove sm4 fretted for a while. I'd get a fretless of either any day though. The acoustic clicking on frets isn't cool.

the fretted is at 750, fretless at 825. they've been there since the store opened a couple years ago. (they keep them in the back 'amp room') not much traffic back there ;-) both come with the godin gigbag. I've thought about getting the a4 fretless, but i think a breedlove fretless is more what i'm after right now.

Cool. I've played some of the Breedlove stuff, and they're one of the few acoustic basses that I like. Still pretty big (physically) for my tastes, but they sound better than most of what's out there.

This Godin would possibly be my 4th hollowbody (I've been really craving hollowbodies lately :D ). I have my 1966 Guild Starfire, which has an amazing fretted tone. And my Kinal Kompact Acoustic fretless, which has a much different vibe than the Godin. Plus I'm sending in my deposit for Mike Kinal to make me a 6-string fretted version of the Kompact Acoustic bass :eek:

I keep trying to tell myself that I have enough basses, but it never seems to work, something always comes along :rollno:

I want to try one of those basses very very badly. Very badly.

And hey, if it sounds great and feels great, I suggest you buy it or else you could regret it for a very long time... you might 'lose' some money but you'll gain a bass that is fantastic for you, you know it makes sense

(Actually I say you buy it so you can take some pictures of it and post it on here for me to drool at:p )

I have a fretless A5 and I think it is cool. I'm thinking though that I might get a piezo bridge for my Spector and ditch the Godin, becase, I really don't care for 5 strings and I don't use the A5 un-plugged enough to really justify it. I do like the look though. And for a 5 string the neck feels really good to me. And, yeah I like the sound too.

Cheers for the stuff, nice playing and nice basses...

and argh, those Godins are too nice looking I swear. I'm tempted to gouge my own eyes out as I'll never see anything again quite so nice perhaps, which is a saddening prospect indeed.
