This is what I emailed my "lawyer friend" this morning, edited for relevance and anonymity.

I may need a little help again, hopefully not. My wife is going to be working on this today, and it may be resolved with a couple phone calls.
So,
Right around 5 years ago my wife and I moved into a rental through _____ ____. I still have the original lease agreement, and can email it to you if you'd like.
A couple things to note;
$250 non refundable carpet cleaning charge out of deposit upon move out in original lease.
No mention of our $350 per dog (2) pet deposit.
Original lease was one year, then month to month.
Our original lease deposit amounts don't match the ones on our move out receipt.
We gave 30 day notice and were out by October 5th 2015. I'd have to look to be exact, but about a month went by, and we had to contact management about the return of what was left of our security deposit. Right away we received an itemized receipt and a check for the remainder. Specifically listing a $188.64 charge for carpet cleaning among other things. $627 and change, to us, and at the bottom, a zero balance. Great, done deal, we can move on right?
Yesterday, we received a very threatening letter dated February 24th, stating we owe an additional $150 for "additional pet treatment". If we don't pay they are threatening collections after 5 business days, which would be tomorrow.
We are hoping to be in a position to buy a home this spring, with the help of our tax return, this will of course hurt our chances to get a good interest rate/loan.
I have a video walk through we made when we moved out, showing in detail the condition we left the house in.
Our pets were never kept in the house, only the garage.
So, if another six months goes by and the water heater goes out, (for example) am I gonna get a bill? There were new tenants in the house within a month. How do we know it's not from them?
We have since resolved it, charges removed.
They maintain that the carpet was urine soaked (impossible and a blatant lie, unless it's from the new tenants) but acknowledged that their time window was up.
But I'm seriously considering looking into a no-contact/restraining order. Could I even get one? What would be the pros/cons?
I'd ask my "lawyer friend" but I don't like to bother him too much if I don't have to. He's got lawyer stuff to do.
I know I should just let it go but these scumbags make my blood boil.
I suppose if they really wanted to get ugly they still could, or at least try, and cause me more headaches.
Rant over.
