This is the real problem in a nutshell. We live in a consumer driven economy. A number I've heard quoted on the news is consumer purchases account for about 3/4 of economic activity in the US. The US gov't needs people to keep buying at an increasing rate in order to keep the economy afloat.
This isn't sustainable. This fact is being proved by the fact people are continuing to go into deeper debt. Of course we have our fabulous gov't's example of Invalid Link Removed to the tune of 9+ TRILLION dollars. If they don't need to control debt spending then why should we? Heck, when we die they can try to take it from our estate, right? Why leave a legacy for our children when we could be driving brand new pimped out Subaru Legacy 4 door sedans with the GPS unit, iPod hookup and hands-free Blue Tooth connector for my superPhone!
