...playing the expensive models at my local music store today, and still being of the opinion that my Squier VM Precision is one of the best-feeling and best-sounding instruments I've had the pleasure of playing in my 20+ years of being a bassist

Cheers! It's a B neck (1.625), so it's the same as most Precisions post-1970 or so. Depth is somewhere in the middle, not chunky but not overly slim either. I bought it for peanuts, secondhand but virtually unplayed, with a nut a mile high - which is probably why it was unplayed! Some nice work on the nut by a local tech transformed it, even without touching the fretwork. It really demonstrated to me the value of paying attention to nut slot height as part of overall setup.Stop posting things like this, you're going to cost me money...

You know, I have played many high end basses and have yet to say to myself..."I gotta save up and get me one of these"! I'll continue to play my 'cheapies'.

You're very lucky. I've never found a Squier or SX that had me even considering putting down my customs.
You are correct. I have an LTD B-50, Squier Affinity PJ and a Cort SB-10. All 3 cost me less than $150 each. I have $40 in the Squier. All 3 play, sound and feel better than most basses I have played that cost 5X what I payed for them. I see absolutely no need to spend a bunch of hard earned cash on an expensive bass when my "budget" basses fit the bill just as good.
My contentment is similar except my Ultra P is relatively high end(but cheaper than my other basses). That said, in the year I've had it my playing has come on more than it did in the previous ten!!!
I have one of the older SX P's that I put a 1/4 pounder and a Baddass on. Works for me as well as at least a CV Squier or MIM P and cost me a whole $99 at the time from Rondo.
My first bass was an '07 squier VM jazz. That thing is a real player...
I don't think my Squier Matt Freeman Sig will stop me from buying other basses. But it sure as **** stops me from buying other P basses.

I have similar feelings for my Fender neck/ Squier body parts bass. Cost me ~$400 and when it was done, I stopped looking at Basses.*

I remember... about 15 years ago, I was at this party/jam featuring several musicians I'd jammed with before. They wanted me to sit in for some of their songs, but I didn't have my bass with me so the bassist there that night actually let me use his Fodera 5-string. He also had a Pedulla 5er. Let me tell you, that Fodera was probably the slickest, smoothest, most refined bass I'd ever played and probably ever will play... but I left still preferring the bass I had at home (which was a Warwick Corvette Standard 4 at the time.)

Learn to trust your judgement. If you really like bass, you really like it. Nothing else matters.
I was perfectly content with budget basses. Then I started building my own with Warmoth wood. If you want to continue to be content, I recommend never buying a Warmoth neck. My whole herd turned over once I did that.
Contentment is a briefly felt feeling as everybody gets GAS.
