In the case of Peavey amplifiers, it boosts low and high frequencies, and cuts mids...AKA "scoop."

Same with GK. My Backline 600 review shows an actual curve, though I am sure each maker has their own magic frequency points.

I never use it.

It's basically the suck knob. As in it sucks out all of your tone so that you can't be heard in a band situation.

The only exception is on Sunn amps, where it's actually a midrange knob.

A one stop control for cutting midrange clarity and boosting low end boom and high end sparkle.

Dont be too put off by it though. Whilst in general these guys are right and it can often suck the tone and volume out of your rig, it can have its uses. Experiment, just dont crank it at a loud rock gig.

Well if i don't want to scoop the mids would i leave it in the 12 o'clock position or turn it all the way down.

Contour is a useful concept. At low volumes it'll somewhat compensate for the Fletcher-Munson curve of the ear's inability to hear lower and higher frequencies at lower volumes. Using it is certainly easier than trying to change a bunch of graphic EQ sliders depending on how loud a gig is.
