How much different is the sound of the current Acoustic Image Contra compared to the original Series I version? Is it a vast improvement, or the same basic sound with a few tweaks and/or added features?

It's different. Some people prefer the older ones, which were in MDF cabinets, as they had a somewhat "beefy" tonal characteristic - the newer ones, in composite cabinets, are (to my ear) more "neutral."

Over the years, they've also changed speaker design, removed speakers (they're now a 2-way, rather than 3-way, which is actually sonically better) and added a good bit more wattage to most models.

But, it's different. After 5 minor and major redesigns, there are some differences. They may be good, they may be bad, depending on your needs and your ears. But the goal in their design and building has never changed, so they're still closely related.

That may or may not effectively answer your question... :hmm:
