Controls preffered?

Volume plus at least one tone control. More tone controls may or may not be useful, depending on the design. Not all EQs circuits sound the same, so I would never say I need 2 bands or 3 bands.

I once owned a Pedulla with a Bartolini preamp that was parametric. I hated it and just switched it off.

The Joe Dart bass approach is a little too spartan for my taste. A P bass setup is about as simple as it gets, i like to have at least some control on the bass itself.

My latest bass has bass, mids, treble, pickup blend, volume.. and it has an EQ bypass switch but it lacks a passive tone control so I would likely only use it in a pinch. It has a mid frequency selector, but it's not in an easily accessed spot so it's pretty much a set and forget type of setting.

I would prefer a passive tone control and a mid frequency sweep knob, the former being not such a big deal as I utilize the preamp 99% of the time anyway.. the latter while it would be nice.. doesn't really stop me from enjoying the bass.

But really.. for me at least.. the only thing that's really dictated between an active or a passive instrument, is whether or not I'm EQ'ing at the amp or at the bass. I like having controls at the bass.. but that's not really the deciding factor as to how much I'll enjoy it.

For active: Vol, Blend, Bass/Mid/Treble. Coil tap with humbuckers when practical. Passive tone control as a bonus.
For passive with 2 pickups: Vol/Tone, Vol/Tone
For a passive-single pickup Bass: Vol

- Stacked treble/bass (if there's an onboard preamp)

Yes, even if there's a preamp, I still love, love, LOVE having a tone control as you can do so much with it.

simple design like just a volumen Knob and you master your sound in another hardware?

You need a multiple answers allowed poll. That said:

AT LEAST one of:

• volume knob
• kill switch

AT LEAST one of:

• pickup selector (switch or pot style)
• tone knob
• eq knobs

Bonuses:

• active passive toggle
• boost toggle

Personal preference: volume knob, pickup selector switch, passive/active toggle, 3-4 band eq

Either a single volume for a passive setup, or 3-band EQ and volume for active, for me.

I'm starting to like a blend as everything I own has two pickups.

Starting to like EQ's better than a single tone knob.

Not trying all of them.......yet.

I prefer a single volume knob. On my main bass, I have a MM pickup in the neck position and a J in the bridge (I replaced the neck J with the MM and didn’t feel like removing the bridge one). They are wired in parallel to a single volume pot. There are just holes where the other V and the T pot used to live.

J bass - original.

My Carvin is pretty close to my ideal:

Pickup blend knob instead of two volume knobs
Active/passive switch, with bass, treble, mid, and mid sweep in active mode

What it lacks is a passive tone control. If it had that I think I'd have my ideal. As it stands I can't really roll the treble off in passive mode.

Passive: Volume, Blend, Tone (Two volumes and a tone? Nope)

Active: Volume, Blend, Treble +/-, Bass +/- (No mids on the axe, prefer them on the amp. These two I can add or subtract a little edge on top, and beef up or thin out the deep end. Mids ? Mids ? I don't need no steenking mids !)

A single volume and tone, P-bass style.

As a side note, I just mostly use these two controls to "balance" the output of my bass between playing with a pick or fingers. For me (might be just me, lol) when I play with fingers, the sound (attack) is bigger and boomier, so I cut the volume a little and open up the tone control a bit. When I play with a pick, the sound is more sharp-edged and defined, so I roll back the tone control to make it a little softer and cut a bit of fret noise out.
