Cool 60's basses (OTHER than main-stream brands)

These sound good- note that my frame of reference is with the 5925, which has a single p/u installed in a central position. A bit thinner and raunchier and lower output than a P, which was my main bass at the time. I’ll try and dig around for a recording but suffice to say I gigged this bass without misgivings which suggests (to me at least) that it sounded good.

thank you, definately i'll get the hollow models then (5935 or 5921) which should give it a little more bottom/heft. i'm gonna get one now y'all got me going

All very cool! I owned a National that looked exactly like that white Reso-Glas one. Had a very peculiar tone, like it was being played in a plastic shower stall. Loved how short/small it was - I was able to stash it in the overhead flying once. Considering how all overhead's are jam-full these days, it's amazing I was able to do that at all!

He designed his own pups, and their DNA are in some of the Dingwall basses today.


Glenn McDougall's company is up for sale. Would be great if someone (Dingwall?) snapped it up and started making some of these stranger Fury creatures again.

Excellent! I'm glad the Canadian Fury's are being represented! He was considered the Leo Fender of Canada. Really cool designs - especially that hs.

Mosrite was popular in the 60's but never made into mainstream production numbers. The 2 on the left in the picture are originals and the 5-string on the right is the product of my own warped imagination.

Love the Welson's - the divided island pg design was riffing Burns of London.

Are you sure? Admittedly I know nothing about 1960 Burns of London, but looking online it looks like 1960s Burns didn't have the Island PG which didn't seem to show up till about the 90s? Just wondering who did it first?

Burns began in the late 50's with various linkages until settling on Burns of London by mid 60's. Their multi-piece pg's were definitely a style characteristic they began. The 90's Burns were a retro resurgence of their original 60's designs.

Micro-fret had some odd-ball designs, including their wireless innovation. Not sure if it was a first or if it worked, but it looked very old-school sci-fi.
