Cool, obviously custom cab “finishes”

I'm sure some of you have gone beyond tolex without going all of the way to the furniture look.

I'd love to see some possibly less-than-durable awesome looking cabs.

denim? Corduroy? Checkerboard? Stickerbomb?

I haven't checked lately, but in the discussions of Greenboy cabs, I've seen a wide variety of finishes on them, some very imaginative.

I actually just went with the furniture/natural wood look for my last several builds, as durability wasn't as much of an issue for me as it might be for others.

This was my fEArful 12/6 build way back when, the second or third one ever built IIRC:

Denim actually sounds really cool. And jeans go with everything!

I got it at my local Home Depot in the hardwood trim pile for regular price, go figure! <groan>

Your local Home Depot carries flamed maple? I can't even get 1/2" red oak from my local Lowe's anymore.

You need to pick through the pile. Most big box stores wouldn't know figured maple from maple syrup.

The fact that a big box hardware store carries anything other than pine, poplar, and red oak blows my mind. I have to drive 3 1/2 hours to the nearest Woodcraft or order online if I want even plain ol' maple.

I'm not sure they even carry maple anymore. It was just sitting in the regular 1X3 maple bin along with a few more nicely figured lengths and tons of nondescript oness. The guy at the cash register picked up on it instantly and commented "nice score" or something similar.

I was pretty shocked to see HD listing Europly plywood on their website last year when I was looking for some to match my other DIY Cabs that I used it for, as I did for this one. I only needed enough for the head case for the tube amp I'm currently building and they were able to sell me a 1/4 sheet:

Sadly* I don't have any pics, but between 1975 and '76 I owned a Fender Dual Showman 2x15" cabinet that was covered in black & white snakeskin Tolex.

Depends. My local HS carries maple. But frankly, look for a mill that does flooring and/or cabinets. Cheaper, better quality, and generally can order anything.
