Clapton’s mother? Not exactly…his actual mother was 16 when he was born, having become pregnant by a Canadian soldier who left the UK as WW II was ramping down. As there was societal shame about such a situation, Clapton’s grandparents raised him under the ruse that they were his parents, his birth mother his sister. She ran off when he was a small child; eventually he was told the truth, and there was a continuing estrangement between he and her.
That woman pictured was the wife of a member of British Parliament; as a publicity stunt, The Yardbirds were brought in to play an impromptu set at his estate, for them and their teenage daughter…
