Which pickups are best, the Filtertron(ish) or the trad horseshoe? I've considered a couple Rics but have been leery of that massive pickup. (Probably obvious I haven't actually put one over the jumps.)

That's a great pic of all 4 of them.
Rick toaster pickups (the filtertronish looking ones) are warm, full bodied, and very clear in the high frequencies. One of their best sounding pickups.
The older magnetic horseshoe pickups from the picture are a design that dates back to Rickenbackers first frying pan guitar in the 1940s. Also a very clear, full range sounding pickup. Both designs are relatively low output 4-7k ohms.
Rickenbacker replaced both with 7-8 k higain pickups in the '70s, which were once again replaced with the modernday
12k higains sometime in the '90s, IIRC. The newer pickups are more powerful, but have a fuzzier sounding treble output.
