Indeed. I have it and all her others and used to have many 12 inch singles when I had vinyl. But that song is still a little... odd. I like it, but it is... odd.

To continue the thread derail, I saw a documentary about the Bangles a few years ago where they (the other band members) said that among the multiple reasons for the band breaking up was the fact that the industry exec schmucks started treating the band as if it were Susanna Hoffs' backing band, and the others grew a bit resentful at it being "all about Sue", as one of them put it. To be fair they had a lot of other problems going on at the same time with their management and so on, and last I heard they have been back together a few times in recent years.

My takeaway from it though was that here was a band where all the women were hot but one was just that much hotter. And still is. Recent photos of her look like she's found the fountain of youth, a 60 year-old woman who looks like she's 29.

I try to stay away from discussions about female attractiveness, "guy talk", and "hotness" on TalkBass generally, but in the case of the Bangles, their image as hot girls was a huge part of their success in the era of MTV where good looks made the difference between a good band that made it and a good band that did not, and that focus on attractiveness led to problems within the band and between the band and the industry types; it played a major role in their history.

But it's worth noting that the Bangles were more than just a group of pretty women playing pop songs; they are actually pretty talented and had a knack for writing catchy tunes that made them quite successful. If only I could send a message back in time to 1980s teenage idiot me...

Great post. The music biz sucks, particularly when it comes to women. Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth talks about similar BS in her biography "Girl in a Band". When they started getting a bit of air play an attention in the early 90s, all of the sudden the record company started pushing her up front and center, and having opinions on her "look", etc. What a bunch of crap.
