Back in the late 80s / early 90s I had a friend who despised this band. He was heavily into alt rock before Nirvana made it go mainstream, and to him there was something profoundly uncool about bands like Asia. I never understood it back then, but now I do:
Shorts on stage.
The bass player used to come and watch me in the punk band.
I totally get it; before them, I was deeply into what was loosely termed 'prog'(and all the laterally related categories.... krautrock, fusion, spacerock, avant rock)because, for the most part, I utterly detested what mainstream rock had become after about 1973...Styx, Boston, Seger, ELO, Nugent, REO, Foghat, Rush, Miller, Fleetwood Mac, just hated all of it. The Who and Bowie had lost the plot, ELP, Genesis, Zeppelin, and Yes were about to jump the shark, so I dug deeper, getting a lot of imports, tons of stuff on Harvest and Virgin UK, truly challenging artists, and then I discovered ECM. Hung in there with King Crimson and Roxy, Eno, BeBop Deluxe. I gave the band UK the benefit of the doubt, but that fell apart quickly. When Asia came along, it seemed like a contrived, cynical slick product, devoid of anything that made prog interesting, just a facade, the ultimate crass cash-in. By then, anyway, since I was also a fan of the Velvets/Lou, earlier Bowie, Mott, MC5, and Iggy, punk/new wave made sense to me, it was fresh, exciting, although I did have to make some perspective adjustments. Asia just seemed like a lame end of the line. Of course, plenty of new wave types went in that direction too as the 80's wore on.

That's not Joey Ramone. That picture has been debunked, plus it just does not scream 1969. 1974 or so, perhaps. I'm sure that kid got ribbed for looking like Joey, but I have met Joey, and he was one tall MF. I even have a pic of the event, an instore in January, 1978, which I posted earlier in this thread. That's me on the left end, him on the right of course, and I'm 6 ft.
Plus, I gonna guess that Joey never went to prom.
