I briefly drove a Golf R. I loved that car! But at my age it was just a little too harsh for my needs. Too much road noise. But it wanted to be driven hard and fast.

My 1992 Cabrio was a joy to drive. The ride was great, the noise was less than I expected from a Cabrio and little the 2.0 was a willing foil to my right foot

The Porsche 924/928/944/968 are still a good value but won't be for long. People say they aren't real Porsches but they said the same thing about the 912 and 914, and the price of those have gone through the roof over the past few years.

And I wouldn't worry about ICE cars going away. If the oil companies ever really see electric cars as a threat, they'll just drop the price of gas down to $.50 a gallon and destroy the electric car industry.

I haven't seen a budget listed but if boot space is also a concern how can you go wrong with an A4 Avant? Talk about a q-Ship . . .

Unless I'm mistaken, if you adjust for inflation, gas is actually cheaper than it was 40 years ago, even during the gas "crisis" in that era.

It's everything else that is skyrocketing through the roof.

Ferraris are insanely expensive to own. They require an oil change every 5000 miles and that costs $500-$1000 depending on the model and year. Spark plugs are $3000 and a valve job is $10,000.

An electric 914 would be cool. I always thought they were the truly cool Porsche, but they have a few issues that (as well as being though "lesser" because they were somewhat affordable, new) caused them to not last well, which probably contributes to whatever price rise they have suffered (Not trying to buy one, just that this as mentioned up-thread.) I'd be fine with electric power.

But I'd need AWD & some serious ability to crank the wheels WAY down for mud season. When it gets bad it gets really bad. So I drive things that are not cute and low to the ground, though the current one gets much better milage than the previous ones (and that's been a trend for a few iterations.)

If California has some idea like jacking there already ridiculous gas tax to even more ridiculous heights , people will simply start leaving as they already are and have been for awhile. The reality is you cant force electric cars on the general public, we have elections that will or should curb such over zealous ambitions. Manufacturers sell what sells, if the people decide that electric is what they want then the trend will move in that direction, if they want to continue with ICE then that is what will be, politicians dont dictate economies, the buying public does. That being said I dont have anything against EV, I think they are a fine commuter vehicle, but to completey supplant ICE is a far fetched notion at best at least for the forseeable future.

I am serious going to look for one of those early 90's town cars after reading this thread, I forgot all about them and remember someone I knew having one back in the day and thinking what a sweet ride, classy sedan that one

Yes, they are. This particular model, was produced in extremely limited quantities, I think there is only around 10 of them that are still existing (might be less). They look like Ferrari made a E-Type. N.A.R.T. stands for North American Racing Team. So these are definitely not normal and would be priced as such.

For a reliable full sized luxury car take a look at an older Lexus LS400/430/460.

Not the sexiest looking car but a great low maintenance driver.

Twenty years in the tow truck business and another fifteen in the car business has made me a firm believer in the reliability of Toyota and Lexus vehicles. I have three... a '96 Tacoma, an '06 4Runner and an '04 Lexus is300. None have needed anything more than routine maintenance except for a faulty brake light switch on the 4Runner that triggered the ABS light.

If you don't want to shift gears, I don't get the draw for ICE. Just get a Tesla and download the sound effect.

There's tons of old cars that look fantastic, but...

- are less safe than a motorcycle (budget for a roll cage and brake upgrade)

- the interior and wiring of anything from ~1984-on is built to be bio/UV-degradable for the recycling initiatives of the day (budget for a custom interior and full wiring harness) and almost anything with over 80K on the clock will be ready to be peeling apart.

The new Bronco looks old, as do the Mustang, Camaro, & Challenger- but they have modern crash protection. Three of them even let you switch gears the way God intended!

For looks alone, I'd love a 4th gen Plymouth Sport Fury or a late 60s Catalina... really, 90s Cherokee 4.0HO 5sp rigs were pretty sweet when they were new, but there're too many people crashing into parked cars, trees, stores... and they're doing it with "little" hatchbacks that weigh 3,000 lbs and cute CUVs that weigh 4,000lbs.

$500 -$1000 for an oil change?? Do they hold 450 quarts of oil and take a gold plated filter??
