core woods Suggestions?

Any time you use a lighter color soft core wood (ex poplar) with a hard/dark top and bottom wood be prepared for the softer wood to; stain easily, develop low spots, and be an all around pain in the butt.

True. But I've used it so much lately that I learned to deal with it.

My Conklin has a figured Cherry top with a Swamp Ash body. It's got a great pop, as well as a warmth too it. It's modern without being aggressive. That doesn't help you much though, as the core itself is Swamp Ash.

I'm not sure if Cherry is hard enough to be used as a body wood, is it?

The cherry I have used in bodies is much harder than Alder, basswood or poplar.......t

Cherry top but Mahogany bass wood on this one.

Sorry Scottyd, not in this world.....LOL Tulipwood is a true rosewood. Tulip Poplar is a poplar with red and yellow hues which differentiates it from standard yellow poplar which has streaks of yellow and green.

It's been a common mistake made in this form a lot, due to Mike Tobias's use of Tulip poplar, and it being billed as Tulipwood.

Yeah, but tulip poplar is also legitimately called tulipwood. It just adds to the confusion- heck, it's also known as basswood and canarywood! And it's not a true poplar (Populus spp.)

Liriodendron tulipifera-American whitewood, basswood, blue poplar, canar poplar, canarywood, canoewood, cucumbertree, hickory poplar, liriodendron, old wives shirt, poplar, popple, saddle-tree, sap poplar, secoya, southern yellow poplar, tulipia, tulip poplar, tuliptree, tulipwood, white poplar, whitewood

In my area they're mostly called tulip trees.

I have one basswood, one agathis, one alder, and an alder guitar...

they can sound a bit "mid rangy"...but with the right pickups...they can produce some nice tight tones...alder works particularly well in P-basses and strat guitars IMO.

LMAO......funny thing is, I learned most of my initial wood knowledge from Mike back in the late 80's. He turned me onto Woods of the World, and the Encyclopedia of Wood when I was doing mostly repair work. It really helped me to understand more about the woods I desired to work with.

Lol, Are you sure about that? If so I'm not the only one in this world that’s wrong, so I don't feel so bad I'm pretty sure yellow poplar is tulip poplar(see links).

The streaking you’re referring to is from mineral staining and its not limited to yellows greens reds, or is it limited to the type of tree, the colors come from the minerals in the ground. I've used it with streaks of purples reds gold’s blues you name it.

I know that there is a tulip wood that’s Brazilian also. Like you stated it’s a true rosewood but I really don’t think that’s what Tobias is using in his cores labeled tulipwood. However you have to admit on a sellers market tulip wood sounds much better than poplar.........

Cherry is a nice body wood.

All cherry sounds a bit like old Precisions, but with more finesse (sorda, kinda)

My fav's are light and easy to work: alder and pine.
Cherry, rowan and walnut are other favourites, but I wouldn't think of hiding them! These would be used for tops or backs or solids.

I don't know about Pinus Silvestris. But pine probably is like working with poplar as a core wood.
