Coronavirus discussion thread - NO POLITICS, or "POLITICS by PROXY"

Yes I do but I have become very cynical with how the news is reported.

Try not to be too cynical, but do be very critical of your news sources. Try to cast a wide net when searching for information, and as always try and be as aware as possible of any outlet's political bias (and make note of pieces that are "opinion", and not factual reporting) - that goes for organizations at any end of the political spectrum.

Good reporting is happening and it can come from anywhere, even unlikely sources. It's up to us as individuals to be educated enough to make sense of it and see through the false narratives.

Portugal, 18:10 pm:

169 confirmed cases. Yesterday was 112.
- of these 169:
114 in the hospital, 10 of which in ICU.
45 recovering at home, with no need for special care.

126 waiting tests results.
5011 under surveillance.
0 casualties.
2 cured.

11 transmission chains identified.

Imported cases:

13 Italy,
12 Spain,
7 France,
5 Switzerland,
1 Germany,
1 Belgium.

Symptoms:

54% cough,
39% fever,
34% muscular pain,
33% headache,
21% generalized weakness,
10% respiratory problems.

Instructions are stay at home.
People are starting to realize this.
Other measures were already applied.

Schools, kindergartens, universities closed.
Malls, supermarkets, reduced opened hours.
Discos and night spaces closed.
Concert halls closed.
Bars very limited. Should be closed.
Restaurants 1/3 maximum capacity. Should be closed.
Private clinics attending only urgent cases.
Cruise ships are forbidden to dock.
Control at the airports.

We are beginning to see some encouraging images.

In my opinion, full national quarenteen is urgent, closing borders is also urgent.

Spain has entered in full quarenteen.

Wash your hands, drink some water, and enjoy the show. Some could think civilization is too big to fail, some think it isn't.

Or maybe I'm just letting my mind wander and we should just wait and see what happens, and in the meantime maintain a status quo of regular vaccinations, good hygiene like regular hand washing, and not stockpiling 3m dust-masks and hand sanitizers (which are a poor replacement to handwashing in the first place) so that professionals can have what they need to do their jobs. Also - healthy diet and proper hydration and adequate rest, while probably not a game changer, can honestly do no harm in general. Outside of that I'm not sure what we can do that I could realistically advocate, because I'm not a medical professional and haven't read anything - peer reviewed or otherwise - that I would consider respectable on the subject.

All good advice plus I would add a few. Exercise, eat well, enjoy life, laugh a lot and do my best not to be consumed with fear. All those things will help me stay more healthy and if I do get the virus I will have a better chance of coming through without getting too sick even though I am in my late 60's.

The good thing is that we WILL get out of this eventually. Another blessing in disgrace, at least for us in Italy, is that the huge part of this started and currently is in upper regions, where the public care health system is at the top in the whole world.

The sad part is that since every day there are from 100 to 200 new cases for every hospital, beds are starting to miss. The breathing aids for the ill people are only so much and they (the medical personnel) are starting to decide who gets treatment and who will be queuing.

Doctors and paramedics are superstressed, as you can imagine. But we'll come out.

Apple is closing all Apple Stores outside of China for a couple weeks.

Apple’s COVID-19 Response

As far as the blame game, this is not the time to be paying any attention to that “news”. We got a situation here.
I was thinking last night NZ Inc would do well to do similar for a month, preempting the inevitable. Short term cost high but benefit to not having the big blowout in hospitals immeasurable. I would leave the ag and forestry sector to carry on at this stage but shut down all the phaff and schools as if we were in lockdown in fear of our lives.

Hi my friend, my prayers go out to the great folks in Italy. Was blessed to spend some time there last fall but I didn't get to head down south. Was planning on going to Sicily this year. Don't know if I will make it now.
I love Italy, the beatiful art, cities, food, ESPRESSO, and especially some of the people I met.

Working on an email or maybe setting up a chat group for my neighbors. We can all stick together during this. We can encourage each other and help each other out if we need supplies or someone to run errands. No one should have to go through this alone.
Lots of this going on here in Oslo now. FB-groups were people can request help for shopping etc. Even some security companies are offering free shopping help for elderly and sick people. There's some greatness in there, and it's good to see in tough times.

Vitamin and mineral supplements are just that, supplements. Getting vitamins and minerals from food has always been recommended.

That said, those who are using supplements can increase absorption by knowing which ones to combine and which ones not to combine.

At the end of the day, and a lot has changed even in my neck of the woods since posting that, the basic pieces of hygiene that were once revolutionary but now elementary still apply, and doing one's best to maintain good health in general can only help, including against corona virus. That being said, IMO, it does well to disinfect/sanitize a lot of surfaces that see a lot of traffic like doorknobs/handles and keyboards, and the shutting down of large social events is probably a good idea if kinda crummy. I don't like panic and toilet paper shortages and stuff, but if we want to really make progress on this, those two things couldn't hurt either.

Yup, they even closed all the libraries here in San Francisco, it may be the best thing to do right not but I still hate it.

I'm sorry to hear that, I had to the UNB library sometimes to look through books on engineering and music sometimes. More of a browser than anything, and it's been a while, but it sucks knowing that these services are being shut down.

Here in Eastern NC (and I imagine lots of places) we are collectively undoing every precaution we have taken so far. Grocery stores are inundated. People are IN CHECKOUT LINES ONLY INCHES FROM EACH OTHER all over the country. They are touching things that dozens of other people have just touched (freezer door handles, etc.) Way to go you millions and millions of dipsticks. :rollno:

Thanks! What amazes me and everybody here, is the extreme mature behaviour of ALL the italians: no panic, no hysteria. Ordinated queues with 1 meter of distance one another. Cities and towns completely empty. And people... singing together from the balconies all over the country! Somebody playing trumpet or a flute from his window. It's incredible!

Are they telling you 1 meter in Italy? Here in the states I'm hearing 2 meters - 6 feet is the safe distance.

Be safe.
Doing our best to not be coughing or breathing down other people's necks, but it's nearly impossible to keep that much distance between people outside of your home here if you have to get something from a grocery store, especially for those relying on public transportation. Wiping down freezer doors between openings would require one employee stationed along every dozen or so of them from 5am-1am. The 2 attendants are doing their best at the self checkout aisles to keep the 24 machines clean where I shop, but the lines are constantly moving and would be out the door if we were 1-2 meters apart

hi Old P Bass Guy :)

I can see the blame game as begun! Nothing anyone does is good enough. Someone always has to be fault.

That is human! We all would love to stop that darn thing (the virus)

And I think one thing is sure: We can't do that (at least not yet)

The little thing is out there, very small (invisible even with a microscope)

and it can kill.

We can't catch it and put it in a cage. We can't shoot it.

We are scared!!!! (even scientists!!!)

When folks are scared there is always a lot of negative karma.

But there is also a lot of positive stuff!

Here is something I want to share.

1 mt is considered sufficient.

One of my students sent me this: "… wir müssen zusammenrücken, mit 1m Abstand …"

translated that's "we have to stick together keeping a distance of 1 meter"

or "we have to get closer to each other keeping a dis…"

I think this is awesome coming from a 18 year old student!

greetings

Wise(b)ass

edit to add: I am very proud to be her teacher!
