Could you survive?

Do you think you could survive if you were left alone on an uninhabited island? ...in the rain forest?

I can hunt, grow food, build shelter, and defend my self; but I can't seem to keep a fire alive.:( I imagine that would be a problem.


What if you were living your life as you are now, but then somehow electricity was permanently disabled? What would you use for money if all of your money was in the bank before the loss of electric?
Do you think the average person could adjust to such a drastic change?

I took two Outward Bound classes, both in Maine so I have been alone on an Island. Knowing it's only for 3 nights makes a big difference. Also being there in the summer helped as well. Both times, I lucked out and ended up on an island with plenty of food sources and firewood. Others had islands that were very small at high tide with a few trees :)

Keeping a fire going or fire starting materials dry, hunting, foraging, hauling water, gathering firewood, buiding and maintaining a shelter all takes a LOT of energy. Doing it for more than a few days is tough when your not used to living like that!! Unless the conditions are almost perfect, there is little time to rest.

We spent almost 3 weeks here without electricity, two years ago. The hardest thing for me was keeping my aquariums cool without any AC in the house. Everyday started with a trip for fresh food, water and ice. Cooking was no problem. I always have plenty of wood and propane. Baths using buckets of pool water sucked. After the first day of no AC and 100% humidity you get used to it.

Sure, all I need is this boot lace, this tin can, and this half eaten Frisbee I found in that pile of junk over there.

Tomorrow, after I regain my strength, I'll show you how to take down a fully grown wild boar with this broken tooth pick. I just need to find the right stone to sharpen it with.

If you are hungry enough, you will eat anything. I spent a hard morning shoveling dirt leveling a football field by hand using a wheel barrow :rolleyes: At lunch time I was starved and started eating my lunch. The bread was moldy. It was horrible, but I knew it wouldn't hurt me, so I forced it down.

Cattails have a bulbous root system that looks and sort of tastes like a potato. They will sustain you but that's about it. I've eaten them raw and they taste like a raw potato. Boiled with salt improves them........slightly :spit:
