Hi all

please see attached. I was wondering what techniques I can employ to nail bars 1 and 3, considering that 16th note rest. At the moment I am subdividing in my head, (tempo is a jig, almost a shuffle feel) but the start of the triplet in bar 1 and then the start of the septuplet, seem to be a little shaky, within the section.

What works for me is during the rest before I would run through the one coming up in my head.

So the first one, during the rest before, I would say in my head 1,2,3,1,2,3 then play _,2,3,1,2,3.
The next one, during the rest before, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 then play _,2,3,4,5,6,7.

Even if you don’t do it perfect it will sound right if you land on one in the next bar, which may be the root of the next chord.

Yes, thanks Casey, that's how I am approaching it - I had been also messing around with using Takadimi system, which, at least in my case, seems to be useful as well. Thanks again.

Pirates of the Caribbean? I think the most useful thing you can do is land firmly and promptly on the beat at the end of each gesture. Have a strong internal feeling of each of the four beats in the bar. So the septuplet just needs to come in immediately after the beat and land where it’s supposed to. Don’t stress too much about the sweep into each downbeat.

Shoulder strings play triplets over the top of you if memory serves. Strong downbeats from you can help them know where they are, and their subdivisions throughout the bar can help you to place your small-note pickups.
