A speaker level DI takes a sniff of the high voltage amp to speaker signal and sends line level on to the mixer, maybe even mic level, rest of speaker signal carries on to the speaker.Slpbass81 said:

Depends. I don't know much about either for starters. Give me a speaker DI any day in preference to bass > DI > rig + mixer.
I have 3 type 85's in my arsenal. Very clean, clea and punchy. I use theme where I need gobs of gain, or gobs of headroom. For most basses I prefer the Radial pro DI which being a transformer DI kinda rounds off the edges a bit. Both are xcellent and have a sound quality about them. You might prefer 1 to the other
I love my 85, one should be in everyone's toolbox, beyond bass it's versitile on many instruments
The Type 10 looks to have a little broader frequency response (10Hz to 50kHz) than the type 85, although the Type 85 is good between 20Hz and 20kHz - plenty wide for bass. If you ever plan to run a DI off your amp's speaker output, I'd go with the Type 85. Otherwise, I don't think you'd hear any difference between the two. So bottom line, given similarity in price, choose based entirely on looks.
I have a bunch of Type 85s and some Radial JDIs and J48s. When I go straight to the board, I usually use a J48. I just like the sound, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the sound of the Type 85.
