Cover acts - whats in demand?

To you cover and warriors- what's in demand

I've noticed smaller and quieter acts Boeing wanted...... Seems as if country is making a resurrection

80's hairbands. Chicks dig Poison and Great White, guys dig chicks...... ChaChing!

Country does seem to be making a big resurgence as well.

New country, 80's hair bands, 80's pop tunes, and a sprinkling of hip hop......saw a band do Jason Aldean's "She's Country", then the frontman starts rapping 50 cent's "In Da Club" to it. It worked and the crowd went wild.

I don't know why, but people request the song Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show every week.

A lot of 80's stuff around here as well as new female pop, Lady GaGa, Rhianna ect...

People really like a lot of the 70's funk and disco but I think that has always been the case.

My band plays fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties and today, and we just keep it the most rocking tunes of each era. We are constantly told that is not in, and we might as well play VFW's, etc, but every time we play a show, to any ages, we seem to win over the crowd.

Bottom line is, if you play the songs well, and really sell them, you can play anything. Never try and figure out what is in demand, because demand changes, and you don't want to get caught "behind the trend," as in practicing six months to play what was popular when you started rehearsing, but now the scene has changed.

Play what you can really play well, and enjoy playing, and you can book.

We play rock from 80s & 90s, but try to focus more on pop, and upbeat R&B songs. Doing Lady Gaga & Rihanna, but also Top 40 club songs like Pitbull and Enrique. A lot of bands I seem like they have the same set list from 8 years ago, and a lot if it is getting cliche. That being said, doesn't seem like some songs like Pour Some Sugar and Don't Stop Believing are going to stop going over well anytime soon.

In my area, country is an auto gig. Slick, corporate, party/dance bands always have a gig as well. Schtick or tribute bands seem to get paid. Classic rock bands can pick up the table scraps if they hustle.

+++1 Pour & Believin are usually hot numbers for us. Seeing a lot of bands going to female vocalists here...

Where I am (California) there is little or no demand for cover bands (at least that I see).
If you don't have an original sound, forget about it!
If you do someone else's songs make them your own by creating unique arrangements.
Ever hear a big name act do a cover and try to make it sound like the original?

Where I am (East Coast) there is no demand for originals bands - however, that's in bars, casinos, Moose Lodge and Eagles's Club type places. Not sure about other types of venues. If you don't play songs every drunk in the bar knows and can sing along with, you won't pack the house and the dance floor. If you don't pack the house and the dance floor, well then you won't be back to play again.

What's hot is what get's folks dancing (either the monster hit songs that won't go away or very current dance hits).. Michael Jackson, Gap Band, Katy Perry, Motown (pretty much any hit), Bruno Mars, BeeGees, Lady Gaga, Earth Wind & Fire, Aretha Franklin, ACDC, LMFAO, Def Leppard, Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers.. this list could go pretty long..

We have an Indian Casino here that did a summer of tribute bands sandwiched between a top-40 cover playing two sets...

Tribute band got 2K for playing one set.
Cover band got 1K for playing two sets.

I'm doing a Pink Floyd tribute now...
