Cover band using backing tracks?

You guys are TIGHT, Rich. I got to make it out to a show one of these nights. Maybe next time you are playing at the Villa.

My current band uses samples to fill in for missing instruments. My drummer is a keyboard player as well, so he created about 90% of the samples we use (Jump was done by my guitar player, and I believe we used a general MIDI track for Uptown Funk). He has all the individual parts loaded into a Roland SPD Sample Pad, with the intros, verses, choruses, bridges, etc.. all divided on separate pads. This way he can stop and start different parts of the song in case we jump into a part early or want to extend a solo or something. Overall the samples are mixed well and the audience doesn't seem to care. Our one fear is if the sampler stops working during a show. We alleviate that issue with making sure we have enough what we call "raw" songs to get through a whole night without it.

It's kind of like our giant LED backdrop, we don't NEED it, but its a better show with it.

That's probably true. However I stopped in at my favorite local venue to play at. the night's band was using a backing track for "Caribbean Queen." They had drums/bass/guitar/singer, no keyboard. It sounded to me like they were just playing along to the complete original recording. When the sax solo came around, 3 or 4 audience members started heckling them as there was quite obviously no sax player on stage.

Well that's a little different then. We use it for some of the sounds we don't have that are mostly in the background of songs that just fill it out a bit more.
