was in a coverband up till this past july, was my last gigs with them. We had about 60 or so songs we learnt the year previous, lots of rehearsals!
All very danceable songs as our singer was a dance instructor fitness freak she had a crew of women just show up at gigs and dance along with her, it worked to get the crowd going, but she accomplished this on her own as well. It was fun until it got boring, for me anyways..i'm a diehard metalhead, but wanted to do something different and poprock/blues/jazz is the popular music around here. We were basically a live karaoke band imo.

Y’all have gone over here in thr Philly area! Last band I was in did Footloose, crowd reaction to it really changed my mind about that song. Used to think meh, but we did it so good they loved it.

Also had to play Brown Eyed Girl, Mustang Sally if this one guy showed up to the gig (we called him our stalker ). Also Lido Shuffle killed. This just ended in ‘23 . We did newer stuff too (MITB, Arms Wide Open, latest Bon Jovi, The Boss, typical bar band stuff for the East. Gawd, we did Danger Zone as a lead in to Footloose! ‘‘Twas a great watch to retire!

but if were gonna play out, i want to make classic rock choices that the 2025 crowd will dance to.

YMMC, but I would consider the 2025 crowd to include mostly people born mostly between 1965 and 2000, i.e. in the 25-60 age range. At least around here, people younger than 25 tend to go more dancing in discos, rave parties or DJ clubs, or otherwise want to go to see famous original bands directly rather than seeing cover bands. I think that the whole idea of a cover band which plays famous songs from different artists kind of requires an audience that has already developed a reasonably wide knowledge of songs, and possibly some nostalgia. Just sayin' this because I don't think you need to worry too much about playing current hits, or hits of the very last few years (which of course in fact aren't "classic" yet).

But then the amount of options of songs that are really famous is huge. I like @rojo412 and @Bunk McNulty lists most!

Our band is not exactly a good example, but at least these are songs we played that could fit the purpose, they are well-known by people of all ages (without being particularly old... maybe 30yo max):

I wanted to add that to our band's repertoirse and I have to ask... how do you deliver the "telephone" sound? Do you play that with a keyboard, approximate with another instrument (I could actually do that with bass, but then I'm not playing the rest of the bass part ), use a background tape, or just skip it entirely?

Well, I fake the poopie out of that one -- we change the key, I don't really try to play Bakithi's lines, don't have a fretless - but as long as you do it with time and some feeling, it works pretty good.

Honestly we just skip the telephone part and start the song with only the guitar. If you can get that sound from something I say go for it but I don't think it makes or breaks the song personally.

I tried to find a clip of how we do the intro without the telephone part but this is the best I could find which is where the first verse starts. I'll keep looking around.

We play both originals & covers. Rather than set lists we call audibles so we can tailor the music to the crowd. It's not unusual to have Johnny Cash, Bob Marley, Alice in Chains, & Frank Sinatra songs all in the same set.

My last band was sorta like that. We had a ‘framework’ but usually strayed from it. Skynyrd to Montel Jordan to Margaritaville to Motörhead. Great fun! Usually 100$ a man three nights a month- ish. No real heavy travel. ‘‘Twas the bomb!

We know and play them all, but some gather more dust than others. I can't remember the last time we played "Venus", but if it gets requested, we will pull it out. We've also had the same core group for over 10 years now. That helps a lot.
