Try a 5 string jazz (modestly colored ) with a multi-effects pedal...

something with jazz pups. it could be anything as long as it has jazz pups. doesn't even need to be an instrument, it could be a chair or a lamp. as long as it has jazz pups, it'll cover everything. even if it doesn't have strings

I play every gig with a single bass. Mostly a 4003. When I don't bring the Ric I use a P-bass with flats. OK half rounds, but it's still nice and thumpy.

p-bass special loaded with bartolinis. Make it a Korean or Chinese squier (stay away from Indonesian)so you never have to worry about it when you find yourself in a less than desireable part of town.
