I'd fashion a simple wood plate and stain it as close to the body as I could get, realizing it wouldn't be perfect.

If you're into Star Wars, you can always put this over that route. This is a fridge magnet, well of course take the magnet out so it won't interfere with the pickup and just glue it in place.

Sorry ... no sound clips ...

But it is pretty versatile ... I wired the Stingray pickup single/parallel/series with a 3 way toggle. Then I added a 3 band preamp ... So I can dial in a lot of different tones ... I can run just the P pickup in passive mode if I want

Anyway, OP, I agree with the suggestions for bigger pickups. But not a MusicMan one. A Darkstar, Mudbucker, or Thunderbucker pickup in that location.

How about something more personal...? An engraved plate with your name maybe? Or a design... but not a rectangle. Maybe an oval? Perhaps a specially designed pick guard that also includes the pickups (not a fan of the rectangle rings around those).

If you're dead set against not using the J pickup, just throw it back in there to fill the hole and don't connect it. I guarantee you someone will tell you they love hearing the P/J sound.

I would go with the bigger bridge idea and get a bridge that has adjustable mutes on the plate like the one on the Music Man Classic Stingrays or Rickenbackers, or add a muting module (like bassmute) on the plate myself. A bridge cover might be another option. Also, I know the OP didn't ask but here's my opinion for the third knob: get a tonestyler.
