Crack in neck (really need advice) =(

hello, I was very happy for today I just recieved my Ibanez sr406 six string bass I ordered from guitar center used. Its my Xmas gift and I was just giving a quick check up on it to ensure everything is in order before handing it over until the 25th....and I found something =/ I found a rather large noticable crack in the upper neck coming from the tuners and a smaller one coming from the other 3 tuners (2 cracks) :hmm: They dont affect playability at all....but Ive never had a crack in a neck before so I have no idea how serious mine is and wanted your alls advice. I even had the people at Guitar Center check it and everything and asked them to observe the neck especially (in fear such a thing could happen) and they said it was great...so either I was lied to or could the weather from shipping from Massachusetts to West Virginia have had an effect on the wood? I dont know, Im clueless, very ignorant when it comes to repairs, so I would greatly appreciate your alls help if possible!

Thanks so much, Jacob

Jacob, these are glue seam cracks, and need to be fixed immediately as they will continue to work down the seam of the neck as time progresses. I would contact GC and send it back or see if they will have it repaired, I would not wait on this, GC is usually pretty good about stuff like this.

This is terrible... Thank you all so much for caring and helping. The closest guitar center is 2 hours away from me near Washington DC [Rockville MD] That poses a problem due to me not having my license. Well thanks again for everything I have calls to make

It looks like the separation might be due to the screwy grain of the center board of the neck. It is wavy, and the separations are each on the convex side of a curve peak. As if the grain were trying to straighten itself, making the board overall warped, and pulling away from its neighbors in those areas.

No no. Call guitar center and ask them to email you a return shipping label. If you kept the box they sent it in it will make it easier on you and you can drop it off at any ups location like Goin Postal or Staples in Martinsburg. I have had to do it before. Or ups will come to your door if you schedule a pickup.

Pete, look closer, it's a 3 piece neck that tuner screws were driven right on the glue seam and because of either dry glue joins or direct pressure from the screws, the seams split. This is ideal for new builders to see, as poor layout of screw positions can lead to this.

...Or I have gone completely blind...LOL

From the photo, it looks like the seam on the right could definitely be affected by the screw going into the glue joint. The left side not as much. A good, strong glue joint should hold up much better than that. This situation isn't likely to get better. I would return that bass.
